Our Grade 1 students are busy learning to read. As you see from this video below, they are getting quite good at finger-tracking the words as they read. This is great, but this is not the thing I want you to look at as you are watching this video. More importantly, these students are showing a real skill in their reading – they are doing something very important when they make mistakes during their reading. Can you tell what it is they are doing?
These students are really paying close attention to their reading while they are reading. They are looking at the words as they are reading and, most importantly, when they make mistakes (as we all do), they are correcting their mistakes – this is called self-correcting. This is one of the first signs of a student becoming a really good reader! These young learners are well on their way! We are so proud of them!
